If only Negroponte was better at selling laptops than ideas, OLPC would not be in such a pickle. Its too bad too, since the technology is amazing.

Selling ideas is even harder than selling laptops. With his idea of a slim laptop for children and the realization of this idea, Negroponte did a very good task. So good, that it got copied by Intel/Microsoft/Asus. Does it really matter, who produces the cheap laptops as long as they are being produced? Even if the OLPC is the most robust solution at the moment (which I can not check because I can not order one) the concept is not copyrighted and may be copied by anybody. Negroponte just threw a snowball and it may become an avalanche. With or without him. |
